High-Performance Data-Driven Spawner System Case Study
My setup - Xeon 2680v3, 56gb ram, Intel Arc b580 and Video Capture in OBS in 15000kb 60fps MaxPreset Overview This project explores a scalable and memory-efficient architecture for managing large-scale entity spawning in Unreal Engine 5. The primary goal was to move away from rigid GameMode logic and create a decoupled system capable of handling 470+ active units (3 different types) with zero IO bottlenecks and stable performance. Technical Architecture World Subsystem Management: All spawning logic is encapsulated within a UWorldSubsystem. This ensures the system is globally accessible, modular, and its lifecycle is automatically managed by the Engine, keeping the AGameMode clean and focused only on match state transitions. Data-Driven Registries: Unit data (Stats, Abilities, Meshes) is managed via UDataAsset registries. By using TSoftObjectPtr, the system avoids loading unnecessary assets into memory, drastically reducing the initial footprint. Memory Anchoring (The "Anchor" Technique): To prevent Garbage Collection (GC) from unloading assets mid-game, I implemented a "Hard-Pinning" mechanism. Loaded references are stored in UPROPERTY(Transient) arrays within the Subsystem. This ensures assets stay in memory while the world exists, eliminating "stuttering" during mass spawn events. Autonomous AISpawners: Point-based actors serve as anchors in the world. They use self-registration to find the Subsystem on BeginPlay, removing the need for expensive "GetAllActorsOfClass" lookups. Performance & Profiling (Unreal Insights) As a developer committed to growth, I integrated Unreal Insights to verify my theoretical assumptions. The stress test of 472 units revealed: Zero IO Stalls: The IO Thread Pool remains idle during peak spawn activity, proving the effectiveness of the pre-loading and anchoring logic. Balanced GPU Workload: Analysis of GPU Compute and RenderThread confirms efficient draw call management and parallel execution on Intel Arc hardware. Predictable CPU Frames: While the GameThread density increases, the use of SpawnActorDeferred helps spread the initialization load, preventing engine hangs. Key C++ Features Demonstrated: Deferred Actor Spawning for pre-initialization of GAS (Gameplay Ability System). Event-driven lifecycles using OnDestroyed delegates for automated, timer-based respawning. Decoupled visual effects via Gameplay Cues, allowing for rapid iteration of death FX without C++ recompilation. C++, GAS (Gameplay Ability System), Unreal Insights, World Subsystems, Data Assets.
