В конце 20-х годов прошлого века балом английских мотоциклов правили недорогие одноцилиндровые машины, а V-образная двойка считалась уже престижной машиной. В декабре 1929 года на выставке в знаменитом экспозиционном центре Олимпия компания Matchless представила сенсационную новинку - Silver Arrow («Серебряная стрела»). Мотоцикл оснащался V-образным 397-кубовым двигателем со столь малым развалом цилиндров (18°), что блок и головка цилиндров отливались в едином блоке. Silver Arrow, получился комфортным и тихим, но не быстрым. Пресса обожала этот мотоцикл, вот только продавался он медленно - требовался более мощный мотоцикл. Silver Hawk V4 получил приёмистый 592-кубовый четырехцилиндровый двигатель мощностью 26 л.с., и разгонялся до 136 км/ч.
