Tom Hiddleston is magnetic and terrifying as Lex Luthor, standing at his penthouse window in an immaculate white suit looking down at a city he believes belongs to him, a genius who hates Superman not because he is dangerous but because Superman makes Luthor irrelevant, and who intercepts an alien signal and shakes hands with extinction and calls it strategy, opening the door for something far worse than he imagined. Joaquin Phoenix brings cold, calculating menace to Brainiac, a cosmic intelligence seated on a throne of biomechanical technology surrounded by holographic displays of civilizations he has collected and consumed, who descends upon a grieving Metropolis after Superman falls and begins absorbing the city into his ship, wrapping buildings in alien tendrils and replacing infrastructure with magenta energy nodes because Earth without its champion is just another acquisition to catalogue and archive.
