Most departments operate independently, and access to the lower sections is restricted. Even after nearly a year, you have seen only a fraction of the complex. Today you wake earlier than usual. Something feels different. The ventilation is running, the lights are on, but the familiar sounds of the morning shift are missing. No footsteps in the corridor, no voices from the adjoining rooms. You get dressed and head toward the operations center. The corridors are completely empty. At first, you assume there has been an unscheduled briefing or emergency drill. But the control rooms are deserted, workstations remain active, and personal belongings have been left behind. In the cafeteria, breakfast has been prepared, but nobody is there. You spend the next several hours searching the maintenance levels, sleeping quarters and observation galleries. The enormous radar assembly continues its scheduled movements above the frozen coast. Elevators operate normally. Deep within the structure, heavy machinery is still running. You attempt to contact the other stations and the mainland, but every external frequency is overwhelmed by continuous interference. The internal communication network is working. Nobody responds. By late afternoon, you have searched every accessible section of the complex. There are no signs of an evacuation, no damaged equipment, no emergency announcements. Even the vehicles remain in their assigned parking bays. Shortly after sunset, a deep metallic sound echoes through the operations center. Then another. On the security panel, the underground access doors begin changing from red to green, one after another. Heavy locking mechanisms disengage somewhere beneath your feet. Every restricted sector, including levels you have never been permitted to enter, is opening. You make your way to the main access shaft. The massive steel door stands open for the first time since your arrival eleven months ago. Beyond it, a narrow metal staircase descends into a vast concrete shaft. Dim emergency lights illuminate the first few landings. Far below, you hear the continuous rumble of heavy machinery. You call down into the shaft. Your voice echoes back from somewhere deep inside the structure. There is no answer. For a moment, you remain at the entrance, listening. Then you grip the cold steel railing, step onto the staircase and begin your slow descent into the levels you were never supposed to see.
