8 Street Dancers vs Live World Instruments — No Rehearsal | Hip-Hop Kazan
Eight of Russia's top street dancers. Live improvisation. Zero rehearsals. This is the opening performance of Hip-Hop Kazan 2024, an international street culture festival held on the arena of the Kazan Circus — and one of the most alive moments I've had on stage in years. There was no pre-mixed track and nothing prepared in advance. The order of entrances was set — but what we'd play, how the dancer would catch the rhythm, and where the whole thing would go, nobody knew. Dancers walked onto the arena one by one, caught the sound, and answered with their bodies to whatever we were playing in that exact second. We answered them back. What came out is a conversation that can't be repeated, even if you tried. My name is Erik Markovsky, I'm a musician — I play world instruments. I've spent years working with all kinds of dance, including styles that are considered very unusual for these instruments. At this festival I was part of the opening performance — and I also served as a judge in the beatmakers' battle, which is a real honor given the level of artists who come to Hip-Hop Kazan. And over years of working at the intersection of music and dance, one idea has stayed with me: Ethnic musical instruments and street dance styles are relatives. Both cultures came from the people, were born inside them — and that's exactly why both carry so much air and so much freedom. This isn't music written by the rules of an academy. It's music where you're not performing someone else's material, you're responding to the moment. So for me, the meeting of world instruments and hip-hop isn't an experiment for the sake of it. It's a connection between two folk languages. This video is about that meeting. About the festival: Hip-Hop Kazan is an annual international street culture festival founded by Marat Maugli. Every year it brings together dancers, beatmakers, choreographers and musicians from Russia, the CIS, Japan and beyond. The program includes battles, world-class workshops, film screenings, a beatmakers' battle, and the festival's signature format: live performances where music and dance are born at the same time. Musicians: Erik Markovsky — handpan, frame drum, darbuka, ghaval, jaw harp Islam Valeev — live pads (a DJ-style set played by hand in real time) Regina Rokityanskaya — domra, flute, vocals Dancers: Vanchek Voynits Zheka Baryshev Lukash Chill L'eto MKey Mickey Huge thanks to the Hip-Hop Kazan team and to Marat Maugli personally — for the invitation, for the trust to judge the beatmakers' battle, and for holding the bar of one of the strongest street culture festivals in the country year after year. And thank you to all eight dancers who stepped onto this opening — without you, this music simply wouldn't exist. If you make it to the end — drop a comment and tell me which dancer's entrance hit you the hardest. I'm genuinely curious to compare. Subscribe if this kind of format speaks to you: there's a lot more live improvisation and music-meets-dance ahead on this channel.
