Lecture 5. “This Front-Line Report Includes My Contribution to the Fight”: The Turning Point at Stalingrad, Kursk, and on the Home Front", from the online course “The Road to Victory”, prepared by HSE University and the BRICS Expert Council-Russia, with the support of the Civil BRICS Council. How did the Battles of Stalingrad and Kursk change the course of the Second World War? Why did the years 1942–1943 become the decisive turning point in the struggle against Nazism? In the fifth lecture of “The Road to Victory”, we examine the largest battles of the Great Patriotic War and the extraordinary contribution of the Soviet home front. In this lecture: • the Battle of Stalingrad and Operation Uranus; • the encirclement of Paulus's Army and Operation Ring; • the Battle of Kursk and the largest tank battle in history; • Operations Kutuzov and Rumyantsev; • the heroism of the home front and the evacuation of industry; • the work of women, teenagers, and scientists in the cause of Victory; • the development of Soviet military technology and the wartime economy; • the role of patriotism, culture, and national unity. You will learn how the Soviet Union succeeded in turning the tide of the war, why the victories at Stalingrad and Kursk became a catastrophe for the Wehrmacht, and what role was played by the millions of people who worked tirelessly on the home front in support of the front lines.
