Why did the Second World War become the largest conflict in human history? How did the different fronts of the war and the Resistance Movement contribute to the defeat of Nazism? In the eighth lecture of “The Road to Victory”, we explore the global scale of the war of 1939–1945 and the struggle of peoples around the world against fascism. In this lecture: • the Eastern and Western Fronts of the Second World War; • military operations in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean; • the Pacific theater of war; • the decisive role of the Eastern Front; • the opening of the Second Front and the Normandy landings; • the Anti-Hitler Coalition and the Allied powers; • the European Resistance Movement; • underground resistance, intelligence operations, and partisan warfare against Nazism. You will learn how coordination among the Allied powers and the resistance of European peoples influenced the outcome of the war, why the Eastern Front became the principal theater of military operations, and how millions of people fought for freedom and the liberation of the world from Nazism.
